The One University of Rwanda, U.R is set to improve the quality and efficiency of teaching in Rwanda among other goals. This was affirmed by the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology, KIST, Ag Rector Dr GASINGIRWA Marie Christine in a meeting held with all Staff on Thursday 4th April, 2013.

In the meering, Dr GASINGIRWA also revealed that this system will provide Rwanda with a better platform to compete with other universities at regional and international levels thereby ensuring quality, at the same time properly managing human and capital resources.

This system will enhance the quality of teaching and research in a number of ways. For instance, lecturers will work in one setting and concentrate on teaching all scheduled hours without having to move to another institution at the same time to provide similar lectures.

Students present welcomed this move saying that graduating under the UR system will not deny them the opportunity of competing for jobs on the market since they would all have similar internationally recognized degree. The practice today is that graduates of the National University of Rwanda stand better chance of getting jobs mainly because they are products of a national university.

The Rector took time to respond to various questions some of which expressed uncertainties that could arise from the merger and promised to also share them with the task force that was set up by government to guide the establishment the UR.

The Public High Learning Institutions to be merged are The National University of Rwanda (UNR); Kigali Institute of Science, Technology (KIST); Kigali Institute of Education (KIE); the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry (ISAE); the School of Finance and Banking (SFB); “Umutara Polytechnic” Higher Institute (UP) and Kigali Health Institute (KHI). All of the seven public universities shall be structured into specialised colleges and schools that will headed by principals. The UR is planned to take effect from September 2013.
